Oath Keepers is an organization dedicated to preserving the Constitution. For those who have sworn upon their honor that they would fight for and defend the Constitution of the United States, there is no expiration date for this oath. While some might find the notion of oaths to be outdated or corny, for those who have placed their lives on the line in defense of this nation or the defense of our laws, there is nothing outdated or corny about it.
That’s what makes Ferguson’s betrayal all the more shameful.
Since Michael Brown was shot and killed, Ferguson, Missouri, has been the scene of some of the worst racial strife and lawlessness seen since the Rodney King riots. The town has erupted repeatedly into violence and lawlessness and while the Ferguson authorities have not completely surrendered the town to the bands of thugs roaming the streets, like Baltimore, they have provided inadequate protection for homes and businesses that have fallen prey to looters and rioters.
Noting this fact, the Oath Keepers have stepped in.
Armed members of the group have arrived in Ferguson to help protect journalists during the time of civil unrest. However, rather than welcoming the additional support, Ferguson police have called the group’s presence “inflammatory.”
Nearly two dozen people were arrested on Monday and Tuesday as protests erupted in gunshots. Though Ferguson has yet to erupt into full-blown rioting, violence simmers within the community.
“Their presence was both unnecessary and inflammatory,” Jon Belmar, the St. Louis County police chief said in response to the Oath Keepers’ presence.
However, during the days rage where Ferguson “protesters” rioted and looted, armed Oath Keepers were able to lend a presence and help protect businesses from falling victim to the lawlessness.
On their Facebook page, the group replied:
“Inflammatory? I am sorry, the Oath Keepers kept parts of Ferguson from burning to the ground last year and we will do it again. Many small business owners thanked us personally for our presence.”
As police try to keep a lid on the potential violence, they are focusing on the wrong instigators. In order to appear sensitive to the ridiculous plight of opportunists who riot and loot in memory of a cop-attacking thug, leaders have granted leeway to rioters who claim to be “protesters” while wagging a finger at those who dare to stand for law and order.
The question is not, “Why are the Oath Keepers there?” The question is, “Why haven’t more residents picked-up ARs and stood their ground against these rioters?”
