Spencer Stone, the American Airman who received worldwide praise for his role in helping thwart a terrorist shooting on a train in France, has been stabbed following an altercation in Sacramento, California.
Stone is reported to be in stable condition at the UC Davis hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Stone was reportedly out with five friends- two males and three females- when an altercation broke-out between the group and a duo of men around 12:45 Thursday morning.
The verbal altercation apparently led to a physical altercation and Stone is not considered to be in any legal trouble at this time for his role in the altercation.
“It is believed that Stone was out with a group of friends when a physical altercation led to him being stabbed multiple times in his upper body,” Sacramento police said in a news release. “Immediately after the assault the assailants fled the scene. Felony Assault Detectives were called to the scene to conduct an investigation.”
Deputy Chief Ken Bernard of Sacramento Police said that the incident was “an altercation between two groups of folks who were enjoying the nightlife. This was not related to terrorism in any way and we know it was not related to what happened in France.”
Two Asian males in white tee shirts fled the scene in a Toyota Camry after the stabbing.
Stone is best known for his part in the heroic efforts to stop a massacre in France. In August, Stone was traveling with his friends, Alek Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler, when a terrorist, Ayooub El-Khazaani, opened fire on the Paris-bound train. All three men attacked the gunman and Stone was stabbed with a boxcutter during the altercation that required surgery to reattach a part of his hand.
All three young men received France’s Legion d’Honneur from France’s president in recognition of their heroism.
“He seemed like he was willing to fight to the end — so were we,” Stone said about El-Khazzani.
Thankfully, Stone is expected to make a full recovery. However, it’s tragic that violence has managed to find the young man once again in such a short amount of time.
