A group encouraging GOP delegates at the upcoming convention to dump Donald Trump has a released a new ad that will air on national cable beginning Sunday.
The organization, called Delegates Unbound, speaks directly to Republican delegates, urging them as individuals to “Choose your values” and “Follow your conscience.”
The ad shows a back-and-forth vast contrast between an assertive, yet even-keeled Ronald Reagan giving various soundbites against unstable, unhinged, bloviating billionaire and reality TV actor Donald Trump in some of his more embarrassing moments.
Delegates Unbound is separate from another “Never Trump” group called Free the Delegates. Both have the common goal of stopping Donald Trump from becoming the official Republican presidential nominee.
CNN reported on Friday that the new ad will run Sunday through Tuesday and that the group plans to spend between $2.5 and $3.5 million on its efforts to educate the public that delegates have never really been technically bound.
That proclamation was brought to the forefront by a new book, Unbound: The Conscience of a Republican Delegate, which makes the case that elected delegates cannot be forced to vote for any specific candidate — even by state law.
The author, Curly Haugland, a 17-year veteran member of the RNC, has documented 240 cases in which delegates have exercised their right to vote their conscience at prior Republican Party Conventions.
In addition to believing Donald Trump is an unacceptable representative of the Republican Party, the “Never Trump” movement also thinks he has no real chance of defeating Hillary Clinton.
