Last month, Paris endured horrific terrorist attacks that took the lives of 129 people and injured hundreds more. This happened in a country with strict anti-gun laws and yet, the terrorists were able to secure weapons to carry out their heinous attack.
This week, in San Bernardino, California, terrorists carried out an attack and killed 14 Americans. Though the Obama Administration and their compliant media entities maintained the charade that the devout Muslims who carried out the attack could have been motivated by any number of factors, the FBI recently was forced to admit that it was an act of terrorism.
Terrorism is here in America and it is not going away any time soon. What are law-abiding citizens to do to keep their families safe?
According to one New York sheriff, the answer is simple: arm yourself. The police cannot protect everybody.
Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum explained his department’s position on the sheriff department’s Facebook page:
“I urge you to responsibly take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm.”
The kicker? Blarcum is a Democrat, a party that largely abhors the civil rights codified in the Second Amendment.
The rural county in upstate New York has around 10,000 licensed concealed carry permit holders and that should give terrorists and common criminals pause when considering who and where to target.
“I’m not trying to drum up a militia of any sort,” Van Blarcum stated. “It’s just a reminder that if you want to, you have a right to carry it. It might come in handy. It’s better to have it than not have it. We’re partners with the public in crime prevention.”
Predictably, not all who saw the Facebook post were kind in the responses.
“There were more positive comments than negative, but the negative ones are very adamant,” Van Blarcum said. “I respect the people who disagree with me. As a licensed handgun owner, you make the decision whether you want to carry it or not. It’s a personal decision.”
Blarcum’s position is not only entirely reasonable, but a damn good idea. The police departments around this country do a heck of a job, but they cannot be everywhere at once. When trouble occurs, citizens wait and pray for the “good guys with guns” to arrive. Imagine the relief of having a “good guy with a gun” five feet away when an active shooter situation begins.
Not everybody is suited for concealed carry, but those that are should consider is a moral obligation to equip themselves with the means of defending themselves, their families and others.
