As more than 40,000 people were gathered in Nice, France for a celebration and fireworks display in honor of Bastille Day, the biggest holiday of the year which celebrates the storming of Bastille prison in Paris during the French Revolution in 1789, a man drove a semi-truck at a high speed through the crowd for more than a mile mowing down pedestrians and onlookers who could not get out of his way.
In the aftermath of this terrorist attack, 75 people are dead and the death toll is climbing. More than 100 people are wounded.
After running over people driving at a high speed in the semi-truck, the man exited the truck and started shooting at the crowd.
As gunfire was exchanged between the terrorist and police, the terrorist was shot dead. Although there is no firm confirmation, ISIS has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack. There was speculation that a second suspect was on the run, but the Interior Ministry spokesman said that is still under investigation.
Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet gave an update on the rapidly developing situation. He said: ‘There is no hostage-taking. An individual drove a truck into the crowd. He was killed by police.
‘Investigations are currently under way to establish if the individual acted alone or if he had accomplices who might have fled.’
Local politician Eric Ciotti said: ‘It’s a scene of horror.’ He confirmed the truck mowed down ‘several hundred people’.
The truck was loaded with arms and grenades.

People in the area are being told to remain indoors with their doors locked.
France is still under a state of emergency since the terrorist attacks in Paris, for which ISIS also claimed responsibility, in November 2015. Those attacks involved multiple terrorists in a series of coordinated attacks which targeted a soccer stadium, a cafe, and the Bataclan concert hall. A total of 137 people were killed in those attacks and 368 were injured.
