Just when you thought that all in California had succumbed to New York-styles anti-Second Amendment zeal, the county sheriff for the state’s capital surprised many when he revealed that his department approves a whopping 95% of the concealed carry permit applications that come across his desk.
Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones approves the most applications in the state. California is a “may issue” state which means that officials are given discretion on whether or not a citizen “may” retain his or her Second Amendment right to carry a weapon (that would be the “bear arms” part.)
In 2010, Jones faced a massive budget cut and was forced to trim 340 positions from his department. Realizing that the citizens of his county would have to be more responsible for their own safety, Jones did the only ethical thing:
He made it possible for the law-abiding citizens to easily obtain concealed carry permits.
“We became very concerned that we couldn’t keep people safe, which is our mission,” Jones said.
Now, anyone with a clean criminal record can submit an application and though they still have to submit to the preposterous state requirements that include an interview and required training, they are almost certainly guaranteed a permit.
Already, 7,000 Sacramento County citizens have obtained a permit- compared to just two in San Francisco.
The number of permits has risen by a factor of 15 since 2009. However, Jones says that in his county, he has never had an issue with a lawful concealed carry holder.
We rely on the police to save our lives. How many have clung to their phones, begging the 911 operator to get the police there before the intruder breaks-down the door? When citizens do that, they are requesting a “good guy with a gun” to counter the threat.
Thanks to the efforts of Sheriff Jones, there are 7,000 “good guys with guns” in his county who can make the difference between life and death.
Is it not about time that all counties from sea to shining sea recognize the fundamental societal advantages to having a law-abiding armed populace?
