Gun Control Group Endangering the Lives of Police and Those Who Open Carry

The left consistently demonstrates their disdain for our nation’s laws. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the national discussion over Second Amendment rights.

Many who irrationally fear firearms and those who view an armed populace as a problem instead of an affirmation of freedom believe that irrational emotions should trump state laws and the very Constitution that sustains our republic.

Every state in the union holds a provision for concealed carry. While such a right is often treated as a privilege that requires a permit, many states also allow for the open carrying of firearms. Such an activity often requires no permits or permission from the government.

Though liberals are, every day in every state, surrounded by people carrying concealed firearms, these same liberals often resort to hysteria when they see people openly carrying the same kinds of guns that surround them each and every day within the waistbands and shoulder holsters of concealed carriers.

Now, gun groups have gone from obnoxiously glaring at these citizens to endangering the lives of these citizens.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, or CSGV, is an ardent opponent of handgun and rifle ownership for citizens and they offer worse firearm safety advice than Joe Biden. They are not simply subscribers to an alternative idea of firearm ownership; they view firearm owners as dangerous elements of society and thus, appear okay with placing these fellow citizens in mortal danger.

In a recent Facebook post, they encouraged followers to immediately call 911 if they encountered anyone with a firearm in public, either concealed or in the open.

“If you see someone carrying a firearm in public—openly or concealed—and have ANY doubts about their intent, call 911 immediately and ask police to come to the scene. Never put your safety, or the safety of your loved ones, at the mercy of weak gun laws that arm individuals in public with little or no criminal and/or mental health screening.”

This is purely unconscionable. Inviting police into a benign, constitutionally-protected situation only serves to place the gun owner, police officers and bystanders at risk.

While many gun control groups could rightfully be accused of theatrics, this is the height of hysteria and should be viewed as a form of SWATing.

SWATing is a severely dangerous situation. In essence, it is when someone calls 911 to report a crime in progress at a location. The SWAT team arrives, busts-down the door and the occupants, unaware of what is going on, reaches for their firearms to counter the ruckus. This can end tragically as the SWAT team members then shoot the armed occupants. It is a danger not only to those who are armed, but innocent bystanders and the police officers, themselves, who risk being fired upon.

It also works out poorly for the “prankster” as they are almost always caught and charged for this heinous crime.

Erich Pratt, spokesman for the Second Amendment advocacy group Gun Owners of America, agrees that this is dangerous and akin to SWATing.

“This practice is exactly what they [Coalition to Stop Gun Violence] are doing. It’s one thing if someone is using a gun in an illegal or unlawful manner. No one is questioning that. But this clearly sounds like swatting.”

Pratt also explains that the move is a sign of desperation.

“Anti-gun advocates are clearly frustrated. They want guns banned,” he said. “But they have been thwarted in the past, so they are looking for alternative means. They are inciting their radical base to turn their own neighbors in.”

CSGV, however, says that that is not the case. Ladd Everitt, director of communications for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has stated,

“In an era in which individuals are being allowed to carry loaded guns on our streets with no permit, background check or required training, it is common sense for concerned citizens to call 911 when they see an armed individual whose intentions are unclear. These [open carry] laws guarantee that we—and law enforcement—will have no idea about the criminal and/or mental health background of these individuals until they actually commit a crime; and by then it could be far too late.  We have full confidence in our men and women in blue to assess these situations. “

“Gun-toters who are truly law-abiding and mentally competent have nothing whatsoever to worry about. Their conversations with law enforcement will be brief and professional,” Everitt added. “As for those who are dangerous and have something to hide which would not withstand the scrutiny of a background check or permitting process, they should expect to face some tough questions as a result of these 911 calls. And that makes us all safer.”

Everitt’s rationalization not only smacks of a certain level of statism- a belief that all potential problems require a government solution, but it also serves as a smug denial of the fact that police will respond to a hysterical phone call from a “concerned citizen” and the situation can and will, in some instances, escalate quickly.

Further, Everitt claims that we, as a society, cannot abide having citizens in public with a deadly weapon when we do not clearly know their intentions.

Every day in America, millions of Americans get into automobiles and drive. We do not know their intentions, but in the vast, vast majority of instances, there is no mal-intent.

Because we do not know their intent in using these dangerous, man-killing machines, should we frantically call the police whenever we see a driver near a playground?

As anti-Second Amendment groups continue to suffer defeats on a national level and with support for gun control at severe lows, those who seek to situate government between people and their Second Amendment rights have turned to a more-guerilla style of fighting. Instead of focusing on federal legislation, they are fighting state-by-state and urging a cultural rejection of our Second Amendment rights.

This includes punishing children for even mentioning guns and waging costly PR campaigns, financed by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Now, it seems, the sociopaths at CSGV are willing to place numerous people into dangerous situations in the furtherance of their unconstitutional agenda.
