If you listen to the gun control groups, politicians, punditry and their surrogates in the Press and broadcast media, you would think that America is uncontrollably armed to the teeth.
That is unequivocally false. It is a BIG LIE. It is difficult to provide extremely accurate numbers, but it is estimated that there are approximately 360 million guns currently in the hands of our citizens. That’s a big number to be sure, but it fails to show another number: the number of households with guns.
This number has fallen greatly. As this report shows, since 1973, the number of households with guns has dropped almost twenty percent. For young people 18 to 25, it has dropped from forty-five percent to just thirteen percent. For blacks, it has plummeted seventy-five percent!
I know this to be true. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. We had pistols and rifles galore. My relatives and my friend’s families did so as well. We went upstate to shoot and hunt. Guns were not a big deal. They were not demonized. You had to have a license, but licenses were for life, even for concealed weapons! In 1975, New York State had over 80 school districts with rifle teams. Even in New York City. Now there are none. It’s all one big Gun Free Zone now.
Then came the gun control zealots. In the 1980’s and especially the 1990’s, they virtually disarmed the legal, law abiding citizens in our central cities and many states. That is why we have seen such a precipitous drop in households with guns. Instead of children being taught gun safety and how to handle and operate firearms safely, today’s educators teach our kids to fear them; avoid them at all costs. No wonder they aren’t gun owners. There should be no surprise at this generation’s ignorance regarding firearms if they grew up in a big city or a state that has frowned upon gun ownership for decades now.
It is amazing for someone like me in my late 50’s to hear the anti-gun left pronounce that they “aren’t trying to take away your guns” when I have witnessed the disarming of New York City, New York State and other cities and states across this once proud Republic.
I would have volumes more respect for the anti-gun folks if they were honest and just told the truth about their true beliefs. They don’t like guns. They deem them to be awful violent weapons of death and misery, and they want them all gone. Banned. Period. Full stop.
But they’ll never say that.
They are content to chip away at your rights, piece by piece, Law by law, until; finally, by way of The Supreme Court of the United States after they have control of it, they will ban firearms in this country. It only takes one generation. One generation filled with fear and loathing for the 2nd Amendment.
One generation that has already been born.
