Kellyanne Conway: Obama’s Motives for Russian Sanctions May NOT be Pure

Kellyanne Conway, who was President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign manager and was recently named to a position of “counselor to the president,” appeared on CNN Thursday, questioning Obama’s sudden sanctions against Russia as perhaps being a political ploy to “box in” the incoming administration, especially considering Obama has known about supposed Russian hacking for quite some time and waited three weeks before Inauguration Day to take action.

Conway told CNN’s Kate Bolduan that she hopes Obama isn’t just playing politics because that is not the way peaceful transitions of power are supposed to take place in the U.S.

“I will tell you that even those who are sympathetic to President Obama on most issues are saying that part of the reason he did this today [sanctions against Russia] was to quote ‘box in President-elect Trump.’

That would be very unfortunate if politics were the motivating factor here but we can’t help but think that’s often true. Even the New York Times characterized it as such that this may be an attempt to box him in to see what he’ll do as president.

That’s not the way that peaceful transitions of administration’s work in our great democracy.”

Conway was referring to a Thursday piece in the pro-Obama NY Times by David Sanger, following the announcement that Obama was removing 35 Russian operatives from the U.S. and imposing sanctions, where Sanger wrote that Obama’s last-minute actions against Russia “appeared intended to box in President-elect Trump.”

Sanger wrote:

“Taken together, the sweeping actions announced by the White House, the Treasury, the State Department and intelligence agencies on Thursday amount to the strongest American response yet to a state-sponsored cyberattack. They also appeared intended to box in President-elect Trump, who will now have to decide whether to lift the sanctions on Russian intelligence agencies when he takes office next month.”

So Kellyanne Conway was basically quoting a NY York Times piece but Obama defender Kate Bolduan wouldn’t have any part of it. Smug as usual, she attempts to paint Conway’s quoting of the Times piece as an outrageous accusation.

What it is is common sense. Obama has allowed Russia’s Putin to run roughshod over him. Remember when Russia hacked both the State Department and the White House and Obama did…nothing?

For Obama to feign outrage now, three weeks before his presidency ends when he’s done nothing for eight years, including Putin’s invasion of Crimea, to stop Putin, is strong evidence that he is definitely trying to “box in” Trump, and look like the tough guy he’s not in the process.
