Of all the names being tossed around as potential vice-presidential running mates for Donald Trump, one name not only appears over and over again but has interesting pros and cons associated with it. Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House, is said to be on Trump’s short list. Some have criticized that Gingrich, 73, is too close in age with Trump, who is 70. Others believe their personalities are too similar to make a good team.
That precise rationale, however, is being used by some, including former Gingrich staffer Ed Rollins who now works for a super PAC that is supporting Trump, as to why the ticket would be a good one.
In the 1990s, Gingrich used the power of talk radio, which was in its early stages but quickly gaining power, to dominate the media cycle much like Trump has with traditional and social media. There is one more reason that Rollins has given in his push for a Trump-Gingrich ticket, however, that seems a bid odd and incredibly mind-boggling.
In making the case for a Trump-Gingrich ticket, Rollins referenced the number of times both men have been married as a positive and a clear indication that both “understand women.”
“I think Newt is lobbying to be the vice president, and I think their people are paying a lot of attention to him,” says Ed Rollins, a Republican operative and former Gingrich staffer now working for a super PAC supporting Trump’s candidacy. “It’d be a ticket with six former wives, kind of like a Henry VIII thing,” Rollins says. “They certainly understand women.”
Rollins fails to mention the reason both men are on their third wives is not because they were widowed. Rather, they have both been divorced twice. Both also had marriages end due to marital infidelity on their part.
Both men are also serial adulterers. Trump has also bragged about the number of married women he has slept with. In Gingrich’s case, he cheated on his first wife while she was suffering from cancer and asked for a divorce when she was in the hospital recovering from surgery for uterine cancer. He cheated on his second wife after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an illness that can be quite debilitating.
So if by “understanding women” Rollins means that both have treated women who they vowed “till death to us part” like crap by stepping out on them apparently not able to keep their tail between their legs, then maybe he has a point.
I have news for Ed Rollins. Being married multiple times because you chose to cheat on your wife and then divorce her does not demonstrate an “understanding of women.” It indicates a habit of using women, lying to them, then tossing them aside when you are through.
While others whose names have been tossed around as potential running mates for Trump, including his former GOP presidential candidate opponents Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, as well as South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, have said they are not interested, Gingrich has let it be known numerous times that he is interested. Very interested.
The Trump campaign is reportedly interested in Gingrich as vice-president as well. Both men seem to be able
Both men seem to have convinced people to separate their private lives filled with lies and indiscretions from how they are viewed as political leaders. Both are also benefiting from the mantra that filled the airwaves in the years prior to Bill Clinton’s until now, that character does not matter in a President.
That’s the low bar that was been set to cover-up for and excuse the serial philanderer and accused rapist Clinton, who has been described by Trump many times in the past as a good friend.
