Too many Second Amendment supporters are of the mistaken belief that our gun rights are safe. The truth is that while we have enjoyed several tremendous victories in recent years, the Second Amendment remains one high-profile tragedy away from extinction so long as the left continues to stoke the flames of irrational fear.
President Obama has already served as the most anti-Second Amendment president in this nation’s history despite not presiding over a single piece of legitimate federal gun control legislation. However, if Hillary Clinton is elected, she has already pledged to serve as an anti-Second Amendment zealot.
During a private fundraiser in New York last week at the home of John Zaccaro, a convicted felon, the 2016 Democrat presidential candidate claimed that the Supreme Court was “wrong” in their decisions to uphold the Second Amendment and claimed that America needed a resurrection of the infamous Assault Weapons Ban that expired in 2004 due to a significant dearth of results.
Clinton has supported the assault weapons ban previously, but in a leaked audio clip taken from the event, Clinton praised her husband for having the courage to undermine the Second Amendment by signing into law the assault weapons ban that went into effect in 1994.
“I was proud when my husband took [the National Rifle Association] on, and we were able to ban assault weapons, but he had to put a sunset on so 10 years later. Of course [President George W.] Bush wouldn’t agree to reinstate them,” Clinton said.
“We’ve got to go after this,” Clinton continued. “And here again, the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment. And I am going to make that case every chance I get.”
The assault weapons ban was allowed to wither and die not by George W. Bush, but by a Congress that appeared to recognize a flop when they saw one. During the ten years of the tyrannical law, there was no measurable decline in gun violence. Hundreds of millions of Americans had their Second Amendment rights stripped from them for nothing.
In light of this dismal failure, both Congress and President Bush declined to repeat the past mistake.
Clinton did not cite what decision, specifically, the Supreme Court had gotten “wrong,” but it’s likely she was alluding to the 2008 ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller which found the D.C. handgun ban unconstitutional and established the precedent that individual, not collective, firearm ownership was a right protected by the Second Amendment.
Clinton blasted the NRA for their help in preserving the Second Amendment.
“I’m going to speak out, I’m going to do everything I can to rally people against this pernicious, corrupting influence of the NRA and we’re going to do whatever we can,” she said.
Clinton claimed that the NRA has “so intimidated elected members of Congress and other legislative bodies that these people are passing the most absurd laws.”
“The idea that you can have an open carry permit with an AK-47 over your shoulder walking up and down the aisles of a supermarket is just despicable,” Clinton uttered.
However, Clinton’s remarks betray a shocking ignorance of the law she so vehemently seeks to destroy. No state in the union requires an “open carry permit” to carry a firearm. All fifty states allow for concealed carry with most requiring a permit. 45 states allow for the open carrying of firearms in public, but none require a permit.
Perhaps is Mrs. Clinton is so passionate about eradicating our Constitutional rights, she should first read-up on what is and what is not the law.
In a statement to the Free Beacon, the NRA responded:
“Hillary Clinton just doesn’t get it,” said Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s legislative division. “The NRA’s strength lies in our five million members and the tens of millions of voters who support the Second Amendment. A majority of Americans support this freedom, and the Supreme Court was absolutely right to hold that the Second Amendment guarantees the fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms.”
