New Miss America Asked What She Thinks About Hillary Clinton

2017 Miss America Savvy Shields

The newly crowned 2017 Miss America, Savvy Shields, the former Miss Arkansas, was asked a political question on Sunday night that is a difficult one considering the overly heated, divisive, and outright crazy presidential election season, a question that could have very well been a landmine for her that could have ended in disaster.

“Hillary Rodham Clinton, what do you think?” Olympic gymnast, Gabby Douglas asked Savvy Shields, who walked the tightrope perfectly, while also bringing up the word “scandal,” and gave both candidates a piece of advice.

“If you’re trying to be [the] leader of the free world, everything you say and do matters, and all of your actions are held to a higher standard. And unfortunately, the media does love to sensationalize everything, and it’s hard to tell what is truth and what is truly scandal.

I think — going back to what my previous contestant said — both of these candidates have done a great job in competing, but they all need to watch what they’re doing.”

Good for her. That was a polarizing question that could have easily blown up half of the audience, and she managed to answer it in a way that made some excellent points without ruffling anybody’s feathers too much.

I don’t know Gabby Douglas’s politics, but I got the feeling from looking at the expression on her face when she asked the question that she was hoping for a positive response — she didn’t ask about both candidates or the presidential race in general.

Savvy Shields’ answer may not have been the one that Douglas was looking for, but I could be wrong.
