Conservative Republican Congressman Steve King said on CNN’s New Day with Alisyn Camerota on Wednesday that moles within the intelligent community who illegally leaked information about Michael Flynn’s phone conversations were “designed to politically assassinate some of the members of the Trump administration.”
Rep. King (never to be confused with Rep. Peter King from NY), said that it’s a big problem when intelligence agencies can’t be trusted with confidential and classified information and that the leaker moles represent a national security risk.
King said that those illegally leaking national secrets need to be found and “purged from the intelligence community,” that those leaking to the New York Times and Washington Post could very well be in violation of 18 USC 798, which spells out fines and penalties of up to ten years for leaking classified information.
“General Flynn has been subject to a political assassination here regardless of what he did or didn’t say to President Trump or Vice President Pence,” Congressman King contended.
Steve King gave an example of how leaking national security matters because of political differences could be damaging to the country:
“Let’s just say for example, if President Trump has put together an operation to take out the caliphates in Syria — maybe Boko Haram — and presume that the intelligence community thinks it’s a bad idea and they leak information in the same fashion that they leaked this information.”
“What happens to our ability as a nation?” King asked. “We are at great risk if we have these kind of moles with this low level of integrity that are leaking information out to move their political agenda.”
