In a victory for both the leftists who abhor private industry and for those who loathe the Second Amendment, the owners of San Francisco’s one and only gun shop is being forced to shut their doors forever.
The move comes amidst new, outlandish regulations passed by San Francisco’s city government that were custom-tailored to burden the one and only gun shop in the liberal city.
High Bridge Arms was opened in the 1950s by a celebrated Olympic shooter, but is now subject to San Francisco’s punitive provision that requires that all firearm transactions be videotaped and which requires the shop to turn-over all personal data of each and every customer who purchases a firearm or ammunition to the police on a weekly basis.
General Manager Steven Alcairo said that the owners have simply had enough of the overburden of regulations. Alcairo claimed that though the shop already has 17 cameras and turns-over footage on a request basis to police, the city’s new regulations is the final straw. In the past, they have been saddled with draconian regulations like prohibitions on advertisement for the shop and even an order to install barriers around the shop.
Rather than cave to yet another round of tyranny, they’re packing it in.
“This time, it’s the idea of filming our customers taking delivery of items after they already completed waiting periods,” Alcairo said. “We feel this is a tactic designed to discourage customers from coming to us.”
“This year, it’s this and next year will probably be something else,” Alcairo added. “We don’t want to wait for it.”
The city’s new regulations are the brainchild of despotic City Supervisor Mark Farrell who claimed, without a hint that he understood the irony of his statement, “Even though San Francisco has some of the toughest gun control laws on the books in the country – there is more we can do to protect the public.”
Yes- San Francisco maintains some of the strictest gun control laws in the country and still, criminals can get their hands on guns. Any rational person would scrutinize the 40+ years of failed gun control legislation and wonder about the efficacy of such measures. Instead, San Francisco seems compelled to ignore all empirical data and commonsense and double-down on the same failed ideas that still penalize the law-abiding while leaving criminals armed.
Ladd Everitt, spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, added insult to injury by asserting the go-to mantra of all statists: if they have nothing to hide, this shouldn’t be a problem.
“If High Bridge Arms is so scared of implementing such a practice, my first question would be, ‘What do you have to hide?'” he said. “Why in the world aren’t we requiring all gun stores to tape sales at this point?”
Simply put, the same reason gun owners and gun shop owners do not wish for government supervision is the same reason I do not wish for the FBI to root through my house. I have nothing to hide and I have done nothing wrong, but our rights exist to keep government at a reasonable distance and operating under the assumption that those who protest the trampling of rights must be guilty is a moronic point aimed at goading the law-abiding to voluntarily relinquish their God-given rights that are supposed to be guaranteed by government.
The efforts of the San Francisco government are eerily similar to the efforts of segregationists of yesteryear. While asserting that blacks had the same rights as whites, segregationists fought for years to impede the exercise of these rights through intimidation and regulatory obstacles to the exercising of these rights.
Similarly, the owners of High Bridge and the people of San Francisco have a right to conduct business… so long as they’re willing to jump through the legal hurdles and deal with the ominous government presence.
The left should be more mindful with their anti-Second Amendment regulations. Those who value the Second Amendment value it’s intention: to keep the populace armed to repel governmental tyranny.
