Democrat MSNBC hack Chris Matthews advertantly lit a match last week when he asked Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) what the difference was between a socialist and a Democrat, and she could not articulate an answer.
On MSNBC’s “Hardball” Thursday evening, Chris Matthews was doing his best to serve up a softball to the head of the Democrat Party, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, trying desperately to give her a question that would separate admitted socialist Bernie Sanders (an “Independent” who’s running as a Democrat) from Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democrat presidential primary.
After Matthews asked Wasserman-Schultz whether she wanted Sanders, a socialist, representing the Democrat Party at the party’s national convention next year, speaking on the first evening in prime time, Wasserman-Schultz became evasive and squirmy, trying to avoid the question. She tried to go vague and then admitted that she would, because after all, the Democrat Party is a “big tent party” (socialists, communists, fascists — all America haters are welcome with open arms).
“What’s the difference between a Democrat and a socialist?” Matthews then asked. “I used to think there was a big difference. What do you think it is?”
After hesitating and stammering around, a dumb-founded Wasserman-Schultz forced out the words, trying to change the subject, “The real question is what’s the difference between being a Democrat and being a Republican,” she answered.
Amazingly, Matthews, in a rare act of journalism, pressed on and wouldn’t allow Wasserman-Schultz to slither away.
“You’re the chairman of the Democratic Party. Tell me what’s the difference between you and a socialist,” he said.
Wasserman-Schultz continues to evade, insisting that’s not a legitimate question, repeating her talking point that’s not the question people should be asking –that the real question is a difference between a Republican and a Democrat.
On Sunday’s Meet the Press on NBC, host Chuck Todd gave Wasserman Schultz a second chance to answer the question and the DNC chair doubled-down, answering the question in precisely the same fashion as she did to Chris Matthews, dismissing the question and saying again that the campaign will be about the difference between Democrats and Republicans.
“You know Chuck, it’s always fun to be interviewed by Chris Matthews and I know that he enjoys that banter – the important distinction that I think we will be discussing, that I’m confident we’ll be discussing in this campaign, is the difference between Democrats and Republicans,” Wasserman Schultz told Todd.
Is the answer that one is for socialism, Debbie?
