Free-enterprise advocacy group The Club for Growth is no fan of bloviating billionaire and reality TV actor Donald Trump, the current GOP frontrunner, and they just did something in a presidential race that the organization has never done before. They are endorsing a presidential candidate.
The Club for Growth called Donald Trump the “worst Republican candidate on economic issues” in September of last year, calling him “the most liberal candidate in the whole field on fiscal policy,” quite a statement considering how many Republican presidential candidates were in the race last year.
But now the political arm, the Club for Growth PAC has endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in its history, throwing its full support behind constitutional conservative Ted Cruz .
“This year is different because of the vast gulf between the two leading Republican candidates on matters of economic liberty,” the Club for Growth PAC said.
“Ted Cruz is the best free-market, pro-growth, limited-government candidate in the presidential race,” said Club for Growth President David McIntosh. “The Club’s PAC has never endorsed in a presidential race, but this year is different because there is a vast gulf between the two leading Republican candidates on matters of economic liberty. Their records make clear that Ted Cruz is a consistent conservative who will fight to shrink the federal footprint, while Donald Trump would seek to remake government in his desired image. That’s why the Club’s PAC is urging everyone in the conservative movement to join in this important campaign to elect Ted Cruz as President.”
The Club for Growth PAC also endorsed Ted Cruz in his U.S. Senate campaign in 2012.
