Last week, my wife and I came back from a phenomenal trip to Europe. As we flew across the Atlantic towards Brussels, I leaned-over to speak with my wife. She and I are both accustomed to a certain brand of politically-incorrect humor where everything is up-for-grabs. I leaned closer and warned, “Just so you know, Europe does not have the same concept of freedom of speech. So, we should watch what we say in jest.”
No, Europe is not North Korea- not by a long shot. But it is undeniable that much of Europe operates with the presumption that mostly “free speech” is good enough.
As much as the left demonizes unpopular speech in America, at least it is not a criminal act to make a politically-incorrect statement (not yet, anyways).
Case-in-point: as Europe suffers the effects of militant multiculturalism and as they welcome a wave of Muslim immigrants in a state-sponsored, modern-day crusade, those who wish for Europe to remain European are finding themselves dealing with the long arm of the law.
Over the weekend, Dutch authorities seized “offensive” Mohammed cartoons during a peaceful demonstration by the Dutch wing of the Patriotic European Against the Islamisation of the West (PEGIDA).
The event took place in Utrecht and police not only seized these cartoons of the Islamic prophet, Mohammad, but they also arrested 32 protesters for a litany of “offenses” that included a failure to carry IDs, disobeying police orders and displaying “insulting banners.”
Yes- being a big ol’ meanie is a criminal offense in Holland, apparently…
One of the banners said that the “Koran is poison” and another claimed “Islamisation is EU-thanasia.”
The Utrecht City Council had banned the demonstration, so the event was held in a park on the outskirts of the city.
This is hardly the first (or last) protest of this kind to take place in Western Europe. As Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel has committed her government to cultural and political suicide by welcoming a tremendous influx of Muslims into Germany, anti-Islam protests have emerged in countries that remain incredibly sensitive about discussions of political and cultural assimilation.
However, just as it would be wrong to claim that all Muslims pose a threat to Western security, it would be similarly wrong to declare that a relaxed border policy does not significantly endanger both Europe and the rest of the Western World.
This modern day re-conquest of Europe must be stopped and both the United States and the EU must quickly become comfortable with the notion that sovereign nations not only possess the right to maintain strictly secured borders, but possess the duty to maintain such borders.
