Virginia’s Democrat governor, Terry McAuliffe, has long been an opponent of Second Amendment rights. To score political points with fellow anti-freedom Democrats, the governor has demonstrated his willingness to clamp-down on such rights.
Last August, on live television, Alison Parker and Adam Ward were shot dead on camera by a deranged former coworker and devout racist, Vester Flanagan. Before any information was revealed as to how Flanagan obtained his gun, Gov. McAuliffe jumped to exploit the deaths and called for increased anti-Second Amendment efforts.
In October, McAuliffe followed President Obama’s lead and clamped-down on Virginians’ Second Amendment rights by issuing an executive order banning the open carry of firearms in state buildings used by the state’s executive branch.
Last December, Virginia’ Democrat Attorney General followed McAuliffe’s lead and revoked the recognition of concealed carry permits for a whopping 25 states.
According to Attorney General Mark Herring, the states that were previously recognized by Virginia do not meet the arbitrary criteria necessary for Virginia to recognize their concealed carry permits. Allegedly, the requirements to obtain the permits in these 25 states are too lax.
“Evenly, consistently and fairly enforcing Virginia’s concealed handgun permit law, as we are now doing, means that it will be more difficult for potentially dangerous individuals to conceal their handguns here in Virginia and that will make Virginians safer, especially Virginian law enforcement,” Herring said.
Herring’s decree also meant that Virginians would no longer be able to lawfully carry concealed weapons in six states that require reciprocal recognition of permits- Florida, Louisiana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Wyoming.
Never a state to bow to tyranny, Virginians responded with outrage and lawmakers began making preparations to strip the governor of his state-provided protection detail as he had so adamantly claimed that more people with guns was such a public endangerment.
Now, after the palpable outrage, Gov. McAuliffe has bowed to the united voices of gun owners across all fifty states and will announce on Friday a reversal of his policy- with a slate of minor requirements that serve as nothing more than a face-saving measure for the governor who bluffed and got called.
The Washington Post reports on the about-face:
Gov. Terry McAuliffe plans to announce Friday that Virginia will restore handgun reciprocity agreements with nearly all states, in a stunning reversal of firearms policy that angered Republicans and gun rights advocates across the nation.
The about-face is part of a deal that McAuliffe (D) struck with Republican leaders one month after Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) severed the right for gun owners in 25 states to have their concealed carry permits recognized in Virginia.
In exchange, Republicans will agree to some concessions, according to McAuliffe’s office and the office of House Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford).
If an individual’s Virginia concealed-carry permit is revoked, a permit from another state will not be honored in Virginia — a practice known as “state shopping.”
State police must be present at all gun shows to administer background checks in private sales of guns on a voluntary basis.
Anyone subject to a permanent protective order for a domestic violence offence will be prohibited from carrying a firearm for the two-year life of the order.
The policy changes will come in the form of bipartisan legislation before the General Assembly.
The news serves as a welcomed reminder to patriots that tyrants will push and push, but that tyranny only exists so long as we allow it.
Though the governor sought to score political points with the left, he kicked a hornet’s nest of controversy and the unified voices of gun owners and Second Amendment advocates can be credited for their role in refusing to stand quietly as our rights are undermined.
