Veterans Group Powerfully Excoriates Trump Over Debate Stunt

Donald Trump

Bombastic billionaire, reality TV star and current GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he is refusing to participate in the GOP Debate which will take place Thursday, January 28. Trump demanded that FOX News, the network hosting the debate, remove Megyn Kelly as a moderator.

When FOX News refused, Trump announced that he would not attend, but devised a plan of what he’d do instead. Trump announced that instead of the debate he would hold a fundraiser for veterans groups and wounded warriors.

In his statement which was posted on Facebook, after ridiculing FOX News, Trump touched lightly on his planned fundraiser for veterans with no specifics given.

He will not be participating in the FOX News debate and will instead host an event in Iowa to raise money for the Veterans and Wounded Warriors, who have been treated so horribly by our all talk, no action politicians. Like running for office as an extremely successful person, this takes guts and it is the kind mentality our country needs in order to Make America Great Again.

Though his supporters are praising the decision, not only has one prominent veterans group said that they had no knowledge of any candidate holding a fundraiser on their behalf, another one has told him to keep his money and requested that he not use them as a political prop.

Paul Rieckhoff, the founder and CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, tweeted on Wednesday that they had not been contacted by the Trump campaign about any event and even if they were offered money, they would decline. Rieckhoff said that veterans need a candidate focused on policies, not on using them for a political stunt.

Rieckhoff’s group was not alone in stating they were not aware of any event. The Wounded Warrior Project stated that they were not aware of any event planned by a candidate on Thursday for veterans. The progressive group VoteVets.org said, “”Don’t hide from Megyn Kelly behind us.”

The Donald Trump campaign has not announced which veterans groups will be the recipients or participants of his fundraiser.
