It is no secret that President Obama and the Clintons have had a complicated and adversarial relationship. While they are all smiles around each other, it has been a barely-passable façade maintained to further respective political goals.
Now that Obama is riding off into the sunset, however, former President Bill Clinton is willing to take not-too-subtle digs at the current president to attempt to showcase a supposed difference between Obama and his wife, Hillary.
Late last month, Bill Clinton stumped for his wife and slammed the “awful legacy of the last eight years,” evidently unaware of the fact that his wife who now seeks the presidency was an integral part of that “awful” eight year stretch.
Bill followed-up his performance the following week by forgetting Hillary’s college education plan and simply just winging-it. He promised anything and everything to the audience despite the fact that his assertions were nowhere near what Hillary’s actual proposals are.
On Thursday, Bill took yet another swipe at Obama’s leadership. At a Pennsylvania campaign event, the former president criticized,
“Unlike when I was president, a lot of things are coming apart around the world now. We like to just think about our economic issues, but you have to worry about a collapse in Europe dragging back the American economy. You have to worry about the largest number of refugees since World War II. And all this stuff comes home.”
Though it is common for opposing-party presidential candidates to criticize the performance of the existing president, it’s fairly uncommon for candidates to criticize the sitting president of the same party. When they do, their criticisms are often fairly muted by discussing ways in which the country can improve, not outright denunciations of the previous regime.
However, what makes Bill’s remarks so odd is the fact that he honed-in on the area in which his wife was instrumental.
As Obama’s Secretary of State, Hillary shares responsibility for Obama’s disastrous foreign policies that have significantly weakened the U.S. position abroad and massively destabilized the Middle East. For years, Obama and the State Department have advanced a remarkably passive and meek foreign policy agenda that has left the Middle East devoid of structure and have enabled other nations to offset the balance of power around the globe. On Obama and Hillary’s watch, our nation has become more vulnerable on an economic and national security level and the entire world has been endangered by the increased destabilization of the Middle East. Further, Obama’s Iran deal jeopardizes the entire Western world and Israel.
Bill Clinton is absolutely right: the world is “falling apart” and we should remember who is responsible for helping enable that- Obama and Bill’s wife who now seeks a job promotion.
