Wait Until You See How Much It Costs to Protect Betsy DeVos from Violent SJWs

In February, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was physically prevented from entering a DC area school by social justice warriors carrying Black Lives Matter signs. After blocking her entrance to the school, some people followed her to her vehicle and attempted to block the vehicle from leaving. Since that time, there has been concern for the safety of DeVos who was vehemently opposed by the left due to her pro-school choice stance.

A U.S. official speaking anonymously to the Washington Post said that the number of threats received by DeVos is unusually high for an education secretary. As a result, she has received security detail beyond what is normally provided to a cabinet member, who are normally protected by department officials. This security detail, provided by the U.S. Marshals Service, costs the Department of Education, and thereby the American taxpayer, $1 million per month.

A Memorandum of Understanding that was agreed to on March 28 stipulates that the Education Department will pay $7.78 million to the U.S. Marshals Service through Sept. 30. The agreement reaches retroactively back to Feb. 14, just days after DeVos was blocked from entering a public school in Washington, D.C., by protesters.

For those who think the $1 million per month sounds exorbitant, the Marshals service released a statement explaining that “the number of USMS personnel assigned to the detail is commensurate with the existing threat and based on USMS protective service requirements, experience and methodology.”

In their statement, the USMS also explained that the agreement is set to last for four years but can be terminated by either their agency or the Education Department with two months notice. In the Memorandum of Understanding the “roles, responsibilities and terms between the agencies to monitor and mitigate threats against the secretary.”

Reportedly, according to an unnamed Washington Post source, the U.S. Marshals Service is hiring an additional two dozen people to provide security detail for DeVos.

It is a shame that such great lengths have to be taken in order to protect Betsy DeVos from those who are threatening to harm her simply because they disagree with her stance when it comes to school choice and other education issues. The left loves to claim that they are the party of tolerance, acceptance, and love. The fact that $1 million a month must be spent in order to keep Betsy DeVos safe is yet more proof that those claims by the left are a lie.

Noticeably silent in all this are Democrats, including former first lady Michelle Obama who, while campaigning for Hillary Clinton during the presidential race, said, “When they go low, we go high!”

Are threats requiring $1 million a month worth of security what Michelle Obama would consider taking the high road?
