In the Wake of the IRS Scandal, Rep. Chaffetz Makes the Case for Impeachment [VIDEO]

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen appeared on Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee to answer charges regarding the handling of the IRS scandal in which Tea Party and other conservative groups were targeted, harassed, and intimidated by the IRS due to their political beliefs.

During his time questioning Koskinen, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) made the case for Koskinen’s impeachment leading with a powerful and damning video.

The video provided a recap that detailed how officials destroyed hard drives and backup disks which contained the emails of Lois Lerner, the ex-IRS official who was at the heart of the scandal and twice invoked the Fifth, refusing to testify. Her first time pleading the Fifth, Lerner did so after getting on a soapbox proclaiming her innocence.

After playing the video, Chaffetz stated his argument regarding Koskinen’s hypocrisy centered around his lies previously told before Congress.

“This is really a simple case in my mind,” Chaffetz said. “When Congress asks you a question, you’re expected to give a truthful answer. When Congress issues a subpoena, compliance is not optional. Imagine if a taxpayer failed to comply with an IRS summons or subpoena — what would they do to you?”

Rep. Chaffetz also lodged accusations against Koskinen that he misled Congress during previous testimony. Part of this misleading, according to Chaffetz, included the failure of Koskinen to prevent the destruction of the evidence as well as failure to thoroughly check for the existence of the emails in five out of six areas where recovery was possible after the hard drives were destroyed.

The damning video that details the lies and coverups by the IRS in the wake of the scandal begins at app. the 3:33 mark. The video is approximately 10 minutes.
