I’ve seen some definitely “cool” people in my life.
I once saw Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler serenade an overwhelmed young woman.
I saw Dave Chappelle smoke half a pack while he joked around with the audience in an epic several-hour-long standup and challenged security to “do something” about his smoking indoors.
I’ve seen “Slowhand” play a mind-meltingly awesome rendition of “Crossroads” (if you’re unfamiliar, Google it).
I’ve interviewed tons of lawmakers and media personalities and while I have encountered quite a few “cool” people, I don’t think I’ve run into anyone who could beat a “tough-talking presidential candidate who signs AR-15’s” level of coolness.
But that’s exactly what Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz did. Late last month, Texas Senator Ted Cruz was approached after a campaign event by Deon Dunn, a member of the North Carolina Ted Cruz State Leadership Committee. Dunn had an odd request: he asked that the presidential candidate autograph four AR-15 “lowers,” the receiver of the AR-15 that is, technically, the official “gun” according to the ATF.
“Without hesitation Ted signed the receivers,” Dunn stated. “Ted is the strongest candidate on the Second Amendment.”
The stripped-down receivers were manufactured by FMK Firearms and the company markets the bare-bones receivers as the “AR1 eXtreme.”
According to FMK’s website, the receiver is a “Multi-Caliber, Mil-Spec, AR15 Lower Receiver, manufactured in the USA of a high impact proprietary composite polymer. This state of the art polymer allows for superior strength, unmatched durability and is extremely lightweight only 4.3oz.”
Dunn reportedly kept one for himself while FMK has the other three. Jim Pontillo, FMK’s president, stated that he doesn’t know what he will do with the receivers yet and said, “Oh my gosh! I don’t know. We were so surprised to receive them.”
There are many people who might sign an AR-15. Hell, I would; but I’m not running for president.
Cruz’s willingness to quite literally endorse an AR-15 signals a firm comfort in his Second Amendment position.
It’s clear that not only is Sen. Cruz comfortable with standing by the Second Amendment, but that he is willing to even stand behind the protection of these so-called “assault weapons” that seem to absolutely terrify the emotional left.
