The sport of baseball has been part of the American landscape since sometime in the 1800’s. Professional baseball has been played in the United States since 1869 with the introduction of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. After the formation of the National League in 1876, followed by the American League in 1901, the foundation of our modern baseball was solidified. 1903 brought us the greatest tradition in baseball history with the introduction of the World Series.

Although the exact roots of the game have been debated, it is widely accepted that Abner Doubleday is the originator of America’s “national pastime”. According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Doubleday first created the game of baseball in 1839 in Cooperstown, NY, which is exactly what the Hall of Fame makes its home in Cooperstown today.

The Baseball Hall of Fame was founded in 1936, with the first five inductees being the legends Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson and George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. In 1939, during the 100th anniversary of the creation of the sport, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum opened on June 12th in Cooperstown. To this day, each year on the site where the original 1839 game was held, the Hall of Fame Game is played at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
