Summer is Upon Us, Woo!

While it’s been oddly cool in Los Angeles lately—June gloom, yuck—we’re still obsessed with the fact that summer is here (okay, technically not until the 21st, but whatever). It may be a transitional season in the fashion world, but it’s interesting as it gives you a chance to play with old and upcoming elements of style. So now we present a few quick tips, courtesy of a few celebs, for updating your look right now.

  1. Swap with friends

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen may have billions, but they still share clothes like this vintage Alaia belt. MK was spotted wearing this belt to the Met Gala, loaned it to her sister (picture on right), and then took it back a few days later (picture on left). If you haven’t got a like-minded twin, gather some pals with similar taste and share your accessories to refresh your wardrobes.

  1. Raise your waist

Update your look this summer with some high-waist denim, as seen here on Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba. Nicole’s shorts are by the Australian cult label sass & bide. She’s wearing their Hulsey Parks High Waisted Short , featuring a nine-inch rise and patch pockets ($209, shopbop.com), along with some ever-classy Ray Ban sunglasses. If you’re blessed with a longer torso like Jessica, try a really high pair like 7 for All Mankind’s Georgia Pant in Peking ($198, 7forallmankind.com). If you’ve got a shorter waist, you can get the illusion of this silhouette by tucking in your shirt into a regular pair of jeans.

  1. Belt it

If you’ve got scores of floaty tunics and tent dresses in your closet, give them new life by giving them new shape. Gemma Ward belted her voluminous top with a medium-sized belt to repurpose an older trend.

  1. Make a statement

Swap out your layers of delicate jewelry for a big, bold, intense item, like these sizeable Lanvin earrings Jessica Simpson wore to a party in Cannes. When shopping for these statement baubles, look for anything made out of lucite or resin with metal details. Forever 21 has a three-inch-long pair of teardrop earrings on sale ($4.80, forever21.com) and Topshop’s Organic Shape Earrings cannot go unnoticed (about $12, topshop.com).

  1. Invest in light outerwear

Until summer really heats up (and even then), everyone needs a few lightweight sweaters and jackets, just in case. Amber Valletta looks smart in her trench, but we think that Ben Sherman’s Farah Trench is genius ($119, urbanoutfitters.com.com). If you can’t see yourself in trench, hit up the Gap for their linen/cotton blend, Long Line Cardigan ($29.99, gap.com).
